Il PROTOPHOS 14-54 è una sintesi equilibrata di fosfati legati, attraverso l'azione dei protoni (acidificanti), all'ammide urea per formare un addotto, e allo ione ammonio.
La formazione dell'addotto ostacola la volatilizzazione dell'azoto permettendo alla pianta di ottimizzarne l'assorbimento. Le perdite dell'azoto sono ulteriormente ridotte dall'acidità del prodotto che disattiva l'enzima ureasi contenuto nel terreno rallentando così la reazione d'idrolisi dell'urea. Ciò rende il PROTOPHOS 14-54 un formulato particolarmente adatto nei casi di terreni altamente calcarei. Tali terreni beneficiano dell'apporto di PROTOPHOS 14-54 anche grazie al fatto che un aumento di acidità rende disponibili gli elementi nutritivi resi inattivi da un elevato valore di pH.
L'alto potere acidificante del PROTOPHOS 14-54 (pH 2.5 in soluzione al 0,1%) consente, oltre alla nutrizione azoto/fosfatica, un'azione sbloccante degli oligoelementi presenti nel terreno e assicura una completa pulizia degli impianti di fertirrigazione evitando l'accumulo di calcare. L'uso di PROTOPHOS 14-54 è pertanto particolarmente vantaggioso nel caso in cui vengano utilizzate acque dure per l'irrigazione evitando il blocco delle tubature e degli ugelli d'irrigazione e quindi trattamenti con acidi pericolosi.
